HERON NECK LIGHT - Maine
Location: Green's Island SW of Vinalhaven
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 92 feet
Year Established: 1854
Heron Neck Light is located on Green’s Island and guards the southern entrance to Vinalhaven Harbor, one of Maine’s most important granite-shipping ports during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The first lighthouse on the site was established in 1854, reflecting the harbor’s growing commercial importance. The current white tower and attached keeper’s house date from the early 1900s and replaced earlier structures damaged by harsh coastal conditions. Automated in the late 20th century, Heron Neck Light is still active and helps guide boats safely through the narrow approach channel. Unlike many Maine lighthouses, this one offers limited public access via a walking path from the nearby village, making it a favorite stop for visitors. With sweeping views of Penobscot Bay, it blends working history with scenic coastal charm.
